The Citizenship in Society merit badge is a new badge that was introduced in November 2021. It is one of the required badges for the Eagle Scout rank. The purpose of this badge is to help you learn about diversity, equity, inclusion, and ethical leadership in society and in Scouting. You will also explore your own identities and values, and how they relate to the Scout Oath and Scout Law.
To complete this badge, you need to do the following:
- Research and explain some key terms related to diversity, equity, inclusion, and ethical leadership, such as identities, discrimination, upstander, etc.
- Document and discuss with your counselor what leadership means to you, what it means to make ethical decisions, and an example of someone who demonstrated positive leadership while making an ethical decision.
- Complete a personal identity inventory and share it with your counselor. Discuss how your identities influence your interactions with others and how you can respect the identities of others.
- Research and discuss with your counselor the history and current status of a marginalized group in the United States. Explain how laws, policies, or social norms have affected their experiences and opportunities.
- Identify and discuss with your counselor an issue or challenge related to diversity, equity, or inclusion that affects your community or society. Explain why it is important to address this issue or challenge and what actions you can take as a Scout to be part of the solution.
- Participate in a service project that benefits a marginalized group or promotes diversity, equity, or inclusion in your community or society. Document your participation and reflect on what you learned from the experience.
